A trip to London

I went on a trip to London this weekend, my first time since the start of the pandemic! It was so good to get back out and to see physical shows in physical galleries.

A great show ‘Clinamen’ at @foldgallery in London. Some great pieces exploring materiality and abstraction. I really enjoyed this small show, the pieces were really intriguing and offered me provocation to analyse further the piece. I was really taken back by this piece at @foldgallery by @lydgifford

‘Shoulder Between’ I find a lot of my own practice in this piece in the way that you can see remnants of self within it, on the piece were bits of dust and dirt, strands of hair, something I have a lot in my work also. I love that it shows a tension by hanging that way and part of the fabric being held together on one side by two simple parts. Really interesting piece and has inspired many new ideas!

Another Really great exhibition by @orlandabroom at @grovesquaregalleriesofficial Small in size but the quality and quantity of the work make you forget! The flowers displayed across the floor to make almost a dried indoor meadow was amazing and I love that the flowers will be planted after the show to grow new life. It was short and sweet with a lot packed into one but it didn't feel overwhelming which was a clever manoeuvre of curation.

What an amazing installation at @sadiecoleshq by @ugorondinone0

This is my favourites from Saturday! I love that each horse represents a different sea where the sky meets the ocean and the blend of colours match. More that that I love that the materiality and rawness of the casting process can still be seen in the marks and debris on the piece! Definitely worth a visit!

@rachelwhitereadofficial at the @gagosian in London. I have loved Rachel whiteread for quite some time and her work has always been so inspirational in my practice. Seeing the work up close for the first time simple blew me away! The simplicity yet the loud chaotic frameworks of the shed we’re just so clever! I also love the use of casting paper pulp into objects like she has the metal sheet in the frame, something I'm currently working with in my work is casting paper pulp so was really encouraging to see.

Got to see @damienhirst exhibition at @gagosian in London on Saturday as well. The show wasn’t what I was expecting but some of the pieces intrigued me, as you walk in there are jewellery cabinets everywhere and it took me a few minutes t realise all the trash and wheelie bins next to them. A few of the other pieces in the show caught my eye from a curating perspective.

Threadbare at @stephenfriedmangallery what a fab show! It was so refreshing and interesting to see these works. I especially love the piece by @jonathan_baldock entitled ‘all bodies are good bodies’ the contrast of materials in the piece and the mutated bodily form really peaked at my interest! Would love to see more in future.

I saw a few other independent and small shows of paintings but these shows are the ones I went into London for. The highlights for me were, Threadbare and the use of materiality, especially the mixed materials in the works. My favourite piece of the trip was definitely Ugo Rondinone, the glass horses were just so beautifully installed and made.
