This is one of my current works in progress, a further investigation into these biomorphic structures. The idea behind this piece is that the ‘ribs’ as I call that part of the structure are the lines of soundwave from a babies heart beat in utero, the main shape is the overall correlation points of the soundwaves markers. I created this mirror shape structure from these and hope to have them as part of a larger series of varying sizes, and each sound will be of different sounds of the inner body, again taking inspiration from Mona Hatoums exploration with her own material body in 'Deep Throat'.
When looking at the building process of these pieces, I realised that when the pieces laid flat they looked almost like a geode but also like a vagina, some interesting shapes came from them and this is another reason I'm really enjoying working with more organic and biomorphic forms. I decided that the piece was too long and so I took some of the ends of, allowing the ends to be open and for it to be more interactive to the viewer.
The materials and mediums used are always unpredictable and temperamental in some way. This piece is a prototype for a series of biomorphic structures I am planning to make as part of a larger installation for an upcoming show.
From the start of making this piece there were various complications but the overall structure was the easiest part to put together and although it wasn’t smooth, it wasn’t as unstable as the outer layers. My idea to make a fake skin seemed straight forward at the time but developed downhill very quickly. Using tights as a base for the fake skin and then building layers of latex on top of it. I wanted the piece to look whole and seamless, but instead I have this piece that looks like one of Frankenstein's creations. But perhaps this isn’t a bad thing going forward, I have learnt from the failures which will help the process when making more and seeing these imperfections in the works shows the materiality and temporality of them. The imperfections of the outer layer of this piece in some way refer back to the imperfections of our own skin and I have found recently that perhaps it is a reflection of its creators own tethering materiality.
Going forward I will definitely be changing the colour to something more natural and subtle. I think that I may just make latex sheets instead of the latex, this may also make them more transparent which could be interesting. All the structures will be based off of different sounds of the body, and I'd like to incorporate these sounds inside the piece with mini speakers somehow.
