This week we had a collage workshop taught by Artist Lee Maelzer which I found really interesting and it got me really excited to try a different art style.
For this project I wanted it to tie into the work I am experimenting with and making for the open cut project we have also been set and so I decided to look into the ties between the human body and the home, and also the home being a metaphorical and metaphysical place.
I have a lot of vintage 1950s adverts that I have been wanting to work with and I came across this one which was an advert of a woman hugging a cloud, I cut around this cloud and replaced it with the dust from a hairdryer and also some dust from a tumble dryer. I have also been collecting these ‘machine leftovers’ in jars lately in hopes to make something with it. I really enjoyed this piece and using the vintage hairdryer as a plinth but also using the tubes and cables as an extension of the zoomed in brain sections of the collage, continuing to think of these connections and inner body works. The collages were made using the colour catcher sheets from the washing machine that I have also been collecting over the last few months. I have found that they always turn a different colour and it’s so interesting to see.
The second outcome of the collage project, this piece is a sculptural collage, collage means to glue or stick together and that’s exactly what I’ve done here. I’m really happy with how this piece came out. I find the reflections really interesting, especially as they’re not exact reflections but instead a more distorted reflections like if you were looking into water. This gold reflection is definitely something I’m going to be looking into more. I also really like the tension of the curly phone cord and how it hangs to the floor waiting to be reconnected.
I really enjoyed this project brief and overall I think I created some interesting discussions between object and body. I will be continuing this discussion and exploration.
