Expanding Foam, Plaster and Bodily Bits - UCA MA Fine Art

This week I've been exploring further with expanding foam and coating it with wax to give it colour and also to add a smoother texture. I really love the expanding foam I’ve used so far in the last few weeks but I felt that it seemed very childlike being painted, so I coated it in a few layers of wax and it came out really interesting. Feels like skin almost, extremely bodily!

After looking at Holly Henders work I read that she used slim fast in some of her sculptures and I found this so exciting and fascinating. It made me think of the piece 'The thinker' by Cody Choi in which the artist made a sculpture from pepto bismol and toilet paper. I love that these materials have a direct link to the body and especially this relation to 'Diet Culture' which often can be a war in home life and which many people struggle with, especially women. This is something personal to me as well and relates to my own struggles with body image and understanding my body.

I decided to have a play and experiment in the plaster workshop at my university and mix plaster with slim fast and pepto bismol. The results weren't what I was expecting. The plaster took a lot longer to set than I anticipated, instead of 30 min to an hour, it took about 2 days. The smell of both the slim fast and the pepto bismol really comes through in these pieces. This is something I will definitely be continuing on with in the future, I feel like I'm on a really good track with it.
