I got to take a holiday up to the border of Scotland this week and was fortunate enough to be able to visit Jupiter Artland Sculpture Park. The woodland area itself was amazing but the curation and works were just unbelievable. I have been to a few sculpture parks but this one really was different and the best I've been to. There was a certain atmosphere as you walk around the park, it wasn't too busy, it was a nice day, but most importantly the works were all amazingly curated into their own hidden areas of woodland.
My favourite piece was Piss Flowers by Helen Chadwick, but funnily enough its not actually a piece in the park and is no longer displayed on their art site map. The pieces reside outside the café seating area, just in a small patch of grass, waiting. I have heard so much about this piece whilst being at uni and have found it in countless books, yet, it is just in the outdoor sitting area of a café? I was totally blow away by this, more so that people were eating their lunch next to flowers made from urine. The piece just really inspired me, this abject flow of ideas presented into a beautiful flower. Genius!
Another piece I loved was The cells of life. The landscape and pond areas are shaped like cells and interconnect with the flow of water. this piece is just on such a big scale, it has literally become mountains. I hope to exhibit something of this magnitude someday.
Visiting Jupiter Artland has made me want to take my work outside more and interact with nature. Lately I've been really interested in rock forms and minerals from water, I think this trip really helped to confirm that too!
