First mini project today, we did a virtual London trip and were asked to make a response to a piece of work from one of the galleries we have seen.
These are the Places we visited;
1. Camden Art Centre - The Botanical Mind: Art, Mysticism and The Cosmic Tree (24 September – 23 December 2020)
2. Coleman Projects -Real Time
3. National Gallery - Artemisia Gentileschi
4. White Cube, Bermondsey - Dan Vo, Theaster Gates (Frieze)
5. Frieze Art Fair – Register with your UCA email and campus address to open up the viewing rooms – only takes a minute.
While I could really connect with some of the other works, I wanted to challenge myself and I really love the pieces of work in the national gallery by Artemisia Gentileshci, especially the ‘self portraits’. The women in the paintings are not the artist herself, but they are a representation and reflection of what she perceived as her own self. I found this mirroring really interesting and wanted to in some way recreate it. Over the last few months while I haven’t had a studio to work with I have been working a lot with digital photography, taking photos as I go about my day I created this triptych of mundane tasks but ones in which over the months of lockdown have become ritual, like artemisia I see myself in these tasks and it is a somewhat abstracted and yet completely clear self portrait.
Below is my response to Artemisia's Work.
