I’m really excited to be apart of this exhibition by @jjchan.co.uk
JJ was an amazing lecturer at UCA and a massive support to me in my final year! Wouldn’t have gotten through it without them! I’m so grateful that I was asked to be in this show and that it has been so flawlessly put together by such wonderful people! If you’re in the area go check it out!
Posted @withregram • @blocprojects We are so happy to finally have JJ Chan in Sheffield!
After months of online conversations, planning and plotting, we are installing and preparing for our week-long programme of events 'What do we know (anyway)?'. 10-17 July 2021
My Piece 'Insulated' is made from one of the current materials I am using, celatex housing insulation, made from a thermoset plastic and fibreglass. A thermoset is a cured polymer, Curing is induced by heat or suitable radiation. I found this method of using heat or radiation to cure the
material extremely exciting in relation to creating a piece with ideas tied to the bodies of Pompeii as the ash of the volcano would have been extremely hot and this helped to solidify the bodies. I found that the insulation sheets were also extremely dusty, this and the colour also hinted towards Pompeii. I made this piece by laying down on a sheet of the insulation, tracing my self and then carving multiple layers of the sheets and stacking them all together before refining the final shapes. These photos are taken from lower down and show the layers and the imperfections in the material from the carving. This series of imperfections in materials and works is something that has developed over time but that in some way has always been present and I believe that it refers back to our own human materiality in that we are imperfect and more often than not, malfunctioning awaiting our expiry dates, this may seem quite morbid to some but as we understand our imperfections, we evolve and so does our materiality and the possibilities become endless.
